Your living room is where guests sit and where passers-by can see in. Most people want daylight without feeling watched, and a finish that looks settled rather than temporary. Plantation shutters let you tilt the louvres for light and privacy at the same time, and they stay put as a fixed feature. Living rooms often have larger windows or a bay, so area (and therefore cost) can add up quickly – which is why an indicative range before the survey helps.
Indicative only. Shutter Cost indicative guide, based on published UK installer pricing (2026). Method: shutter area (m²) × the per m² range for the material. Not a quote.
Indicative price per m² (fitted)
| Material | Indicative £ per m² (fitted) |
|---|---|
| MDF / vinyl | £250–£350 |
| Faux wood / composite | £290–£400 |
| Hardwood | £330–£550 |
How to estimate yours (our method)
Multiply the width by the height of the area the shutter will cover, in metres, then apply the range for your material. For example, a 1.5 m × 1.4 m living room window is 2.1 m², which is about £525–£735 in MDF / vinyl, £609–£840 in faux wood or £693–£1155 in hardwood. Rounded to the nearest pound, including VAT.
Which style suits a living room?
- Full height: covers the whole window and gives the most control when closed.
- Café style: covers only the lower part, for privacy from the street while the top stays clear for light. Often the lowest-cost option on a given window because the shutter area is smaller.
- Tier-on-tier: open the top for daylight while the lower panels stay closed. Popular on street-facing rooms and sash windows; tends to cost more than full height because of the extra panels and hardware.
- Bay windows: common in living rooms. Add up every section of the bay for the total area, then use our bay measuring planner.
- Hardwood: often chosen for larger spans and a premium finish; see the hardwood row in the table above.

We don't add a fixed amount for room type or style, because extras vary too much between installers to estimate reliably. A free survey gives you an exact price.
